<br />
<div style="margin: 0px;">
<i>One of the projects I'm currently working on is A Hotel in Barcelona, and I cannot think of Barcelona without thinking about the whimsical architecture of Antoni Gaudi.</i></div>
<i></i><i></i><br />
<div style="margin: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0px;">
If you love architecture, and whimsical work that makes you
smile, feel happy and celebrate life, then there is no better place for you than
Barcelona. That is where you’ll find Antoni Gaudi’s work, and where you will
commune with nature in a most wonderful way.</div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0px;">
There are the Dali, Picasso and Miro museums, but Gaudi’s
work alone is worth a trip to Barcelona, many of his buildings were designated
World Heritage Sites. In 1878 upon receiving his degree, the Director of the
School of Architecture of Barcelona, said. “I don’t know if we have given this
qualification to a madman or a genius, only time will tell.” Time has told, an
unequivocal original genius.</div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0px;">
Gaudi is considered a major contributor to the ‘Catalan Modernism’
style of architecture, and the leading proponent of the Art Nouveau movement, but
the end result refuses to be qualified as anything but ‘Gaudi’. His style cannot
really be classified, it’s unique, extravagant, original, earthy, beyond
whimsy, and simply stunning. <span style="margin: 0px;"> </span></div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0px;">
Gaudi was born in 1852 and died in a tram accident in 1926.
His last days were spent at his most famous unfinished work, La Sagrada Familia.
There is hope that it will be finished by the 100th anniversary of his death,
in 2026. He left enough detailed information that the basilica can be
completed, and with public donations it is a work in progress. </div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0px;">
The interior of La Sagrada Familia is now open to the
public, and the use of light from above and through the stained glass windows
is mesmerizing. The columns reach the top to support the structure, and it
reflects his love of nature, showing a dazzling and lively interpretation of a
forest with branches reaching for the light.</div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0px;">
His use of ceramic tile, wood, wrought iron, brick, colorful
paint results in a stroll through a fantasy, as can be witnessed in the
Pedrera, and Casa Batllo buildings, as well as La Sagrada Familia, and Park
Guell, where a serpentine bench provides a respite, along with a pure sense of
joy.</div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0px;">
His work is truly amazing, and once you’ve seen it, you’ll want
to see it again, and never forget it. </div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0px;">
Cheers,</div>

turned out to have cold and damp winters, and I’m not getting any younger. It
was a joyous occasion, warm, in fact hot, hot in summer, but I spent July and
August either in the pool, or in air conditioning. Any walking was done bright
and early in the morning. So far so good, until September that is-when a major
hurricane decided to fully welcome me to Florida. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Calibri;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0px 0px 13.33px;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Just as in Alexandria, second winter there we had a
blizzard, a real blizzard, except there were no snow plows, no salt, only lots
of snow, blowing wind and cold.<span style="margin: 0px;"> </span>The
first year in Florida, in our little corner of paradise, we have a hurricane
barreling our way.</span></div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0px 0px 13.33px;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">My newly minted son-in-law, who once worked for FEMA, asked me
if I was prepared? My response, I have coffee, and milk. What else is needed? I’m
good. I was also an idiot. As someone who is used to research, I failed
miserably. Son-in-law persisted, asking what happens if you have no power, no
water, how exactly are you going to make that coffee? You may be stranded for
days. What’s going to happen to your milk in the fridge? Things I never thought
of, but should have, that is where basic common sense should kick in.</span></div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0px 0px 13.33px;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">It was then that the litany began from son-in-law, for which
by the way I’m exceedingly grateful. Fill tub, and anything you can with water,
go to the store and buy more water, canned foods, supplies that do not need
refrigeration, batteries, battery operated emergency radio, little sterno
stove, all the things I didn’t think off, but in reality, should have. </span></div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0px 0px 13.33px;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Once it sank in that this was really happening, I listened
and moved speedily, went to store and was able to get all the supplies, except
for the sterno stove, that was sold out everywhere. Water, and general food
supplies were plentiful, and our local Publix delivered goods every day, until
the trucks could no longer make the deliveries safely. As always there were
people who waited until the last possible minute, and then complained there was
no water or bread. </span></div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0px 0px 13.33px;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">There was more, take pictures of everything in the home,
it’ll be easier to deal with insurance company later, if necessary. Set up a
cell phone link with immediate family, just to let them know things are well.
And next time head for the hills before hurricane hits…which I promised to do. <span style="margin: 0px;"> </span></span></div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0px 0px 13.33px;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">I should also explain, that I live 34ft above sea level, that
is a veritable mountain in Florida, it was not in the evacuation zone, and in
fact people under evacuation were told to come here. If we had been told to
evacuate, I would have. Not listening endangers us all, especially the first
responders.</span></div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0px 0px 13.33px;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">I also realized, a bit too late to do anything about it,
that staying caused a great deal of fear and distress for family. </span></div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0px 0px 13.33px;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">The day before it hit, our maintenance crew walked around to
make sure nothing would be airborne. The tennis courts were bare, all outdoor
facilities were cleared, all chairs, umbrellas, tables by the pool were stored
inside, the area looked desolate. Yes, I went swimming, weather was still good.
</span></div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0px 0px 13.33px;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Neighbors walked around to make sure everyone’s flower pots,
decorations were safely stored. Even metal benches near our ponds were turned
down, all the activity was interesting to witness. Inside, garage doors were
bracketed down, and all windows were securely locked.</span></div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0px 0px 13.33px;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">The day of the hurricane, the TV was on all day, with excellent
continuous weather coverage, literally up to the minute changes in the path of
the hurricane, the strength, and the dangers involved, area by area. One thing
I’m still trying to figure out is the necessity of the live news reports from
cars on the road, and especially reporters on foot, who were almost swept away
by rain and wind. <span style="margin: 0px;"> </span></span></div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0px 0px 13.33px;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">As the day wore on, the winds picked up speed, and I have
never heard such howling and buzzing, and I want to say baritone whining. I was
amazed how far the trees swayed and bent without breaking, such fury, and the
house backs up to the forest preserves, the noise seemed amplified. It was
fascinating to watch. One thing I will say about the house, the wind was
horrific, but I did not hear the windows rattle.<span style="margin: 0px;"> </span>Sleep did not come easily, especially since
every few minutes there would be a tornado warning. <span style="margin: 0px;"> </span>That I didn’t expect, never before did I
associate hurricanes with tornados.</span></div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0px 0px 13.33px;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">The storm lasted overnight, and next morning after the bulk
of the storm passed, we lost power for twelve hours, the house remained dry,
our street did flood, but was cleared and cleaned relatively quickly. Kudos to
our maintenance crew, who stayed overnight in the clubhouse in case of an
emergency. Most of us wound up cooking and baking stuff to make sure they
wouldn’t go hungry.<span style="margin: 0px;"> </span></span></div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0px 0px 13.33px;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Our community came through beautifully, we had frequent
updates from the president of the board, on the status of our preparedness, and
neighbor took care of neighbor. No one flinched, and the old timers kept
saying, been through it before, don’t worry, it’ll be okay. And luckily it was.
</span></div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0px 0px 13.33px;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">I might add that this Christmas I received a full hurricane
emergency kit from younger daughter and son-in-law, and I do mean full kit,
from huge expandable plastic water containers, to radio, sterno stove and fuel,
among many other things. </span></div>

<br />
<div style="margin: 0px 0px 13.33px;">
<span lang="EN" style="margin: 0px;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">I have been absent from the blogging world, simply because I thought there
were too many, and we have only so much time to read all the stuff we’re
inundated with on a daily basis.</span></span></div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0px 0px 13.33px;">
<span lang="EN" style="margin: 0px;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">Recently I have become aware that many people who visit my website are
repeat customers, and are probably looking for fresh tidbits, and I have been
neglectful, and haven’t provided any. My awareness should you ask-came from
tracking my website stats-finally, better late than not at all. </span></span></div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0px 0px 13.33px;">
<span lang="EN" style="margin: 0px;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">Many are visiting my website looking for travel information, apparently some
of the search engines send new customers my way, and those people are likely
disappointed in the results, again, nothing new posted, besides my travel blogs
were merely insights into places and things I enjoy doing while travelling. </span></span></div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0px 0px 13.33px;">
<span lang="EN" style="margin: 0px;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">It’s been a busy couple of years, I have moved-yes, again-further South for
warmth and the occasional hurricane. Irma would have been a terrific blog,
since I was home, and the experience was interesting to put it mildly, and now
that I think of it, will write and post it.</span></span></div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0px 0px 13.33px;">
<span lang="EN" style="margin: 0px;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">In February I went on a Caribbean cruise with friends, and fell in love
with Curacao, again, another blog just popped into my head, so far two to go. </span></span></div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0px 0px 13.33px;">
<span lang="EN" style="margin: 0px;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">Writing has been slow going, I can find plenty of excuses, but they would
be just that-excuses-except for the novella from hell, that simply will not end,
no matter how many times I edit, the ending eludes me. </span></span></div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0px 0px 13.33px;">
<span lang="EN" style="margin: 0px;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">The sequel to <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">A Fire Within</i> is
almost done, and since I do not plot my stories, I’m what is known as a <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">panster</i>-I write by the seat of my pants-hence
<i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">panster</i>. I start with a tiny basic outline,
and then I let the characters drive the story…that is how I became a romance
writer, instead of cozy mystery writer. The characters clicked in <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">A Hotel in Paris</i>, and I had to learn
about romance. In this particular case, they’re not doing well at all. <span style="margin: 0px;"> </span></span></span></div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0px 0px 13.33px;">
<span lang="EN" style="margin: 0px;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">There are two tasks that I aim to finish, namely preparedness, and not
taking advice from family for a major hurricane coming our way, and a new
travel blog. Please wish me luck.</span></span></div>

The place is gorgeous, and in spite of the long flight I want to go back.<br />

<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Kindness matters, yet we’ve been seduced by negative commentary,
as if appearance, how someone looks, or dresses is the all important gauge of
success or relevance. In my book, it is not, kindness, tolerance, and
acceptance of others is. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
How often do we take the time to just whisper <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">thank you</i> to one in particular. Just a
whispered <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">thank you</i>. How often do we
count our blessings? How often do we take the time to just relax?<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>How often do we smile for no reason at all? I
think we should, on a daily basis. If we did that, we’d see how lucky we are, because
there are always others that are worse off. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
We get on with our daily lives, but most of us are blessed,
sure enough we have problems, various ills, issues at work, with friends, at
home, all the daily stuff that I call <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">drudge
stuff</i>, but it is in fact life.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
With age comes wisdom, or at least that is what everyone
says. Wisdom to take a breath and say thanks, wisdom to know the difference
between what is important, and what is superfluous. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I’ve always had the philosophy that you should do what you
can now, tomorrow is not guaranteed. Don’t wait to call family and friends. Don’t
wait to be kind, and helpful. Don’t wait to do what makes you happy; take that road
trip, read that book, visit that family member or friend.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Stay physically connected to the people
important in your life, and don’t let minor disagreements destroy those human connections.
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
We’re so hooked on those electronic gizmos that we lose
sight of what matters. You go to lunch with friends, sit down and start
texting.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Wasn’t it the idea to go to
lunch with friends-sans the electronic equipage-is it really that important to
answer that text? Don’t we get a break, maybe more to the point do we want that
break? I know I do. Am I missing something, or is it just the age difference.
You know, the<i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;"> with age comes wisdom</i> adage.
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Last week, I was walking out of Macy’s and a young thing
bumped into me at the door, she didn’t even know I was there, didn’t look up,
just plowed ahead. She was busy texting, and what was more telling, she didn’t
even apologize. Must be the age thing again. To me kindness, and manners are
important, they represent a civilized and thoughtful approach to our dealings
with each other. It should not be that difficult.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
On that note, take a breath, be thankful, and let's be kind to
others.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">I’m heading back to
Rome in October, and thought I’d share some impressions of a previous trip in
2014. <o:p></o:p></i></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Rome has one of the biggest cruise ports in Europe, and that
suits me quite well. It is one of those ancient cities that will take more than
one visit to see, and many of the cruises start in Rome. I try to stay for two
or three days before boarding the ship. You don’t want to arrive on the same
day, especially if it’s an overseas destination, that is much too risky, and
Rome is always well worth the extra time. There are many hotels that fit all
budgets.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Even if you spend a whole day in the Vatican alone, it is
not enough, and would also prove quite exhausting, if nothing else the huge
crowds would do you in. They say about twenty five to thirty thousand people
visit the Vatican daily. The best I can do is five or six hours at a time.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
The treasures housed within that community are unbelievable,
it is a Mecca for art lovers. Michelangelo and the Pieta, and the Sistine
Chapel are sites that once seen will never be forgotten, and must be seen again
if at all possible.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The Chapel, a
rectangular room in the basement is all Michelangelo, it is bare of
furnishings. It is a place to pay homage to a magnificent artist and his immeasurable
artistry. It will leave you breathless.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I have done independent tours to the big sites, but now I
book a tour to the Vatican and the other special sites because of crowds, it is
easier and faster to get in. You don’t wait in the long lines, and at my age it
is well worth it. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
For this upcoming trip I booked two tours through Viator;
Vatican Walking Tour- this tour includes the Sistene Chapel, Raphael’s Rooms
and of course St. Peter’s; after the tour I can wonder around on my own. The
other tour I booked through them is the Ancient Rome and Colosseum Walking
Tour. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I’m going with my grandchildren, and it’s their first visit
to Europe-I wanted to make sure they would get a decent historical introduction
to this magnificent city. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
If the stop is part of the cruise, I book through the cruise
line, for one excellent reason, if there is a delay, they will wait for you. It
has happened where the bus was delayed for about an hour. There was a general
announcement about the delay, and we departed once the bus returned to port.
That is not the case if you book through an outside agency. For me, it is not worth
the extra stress to make sure I’ll be back on time, especially true if the
visiting site is a bit of a distance from the port....but I digress.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Ancient Rome offers the Forum, the Colosseum, the Pantheon,
these are all places that must be seen, the age and history will astound. There
is also the lively Rome, the Spanish Steps, the Trevi Fountain, so tourist
packed that you have to wait, and weave your way to get up close and personal. The
outdoor restaurants, the entertainment at said places, where you’ll get a
troubadour serenading you, and it’s best to have some change ready for a tip.
Just walking the old streets is a delight. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Then of course there are the espresso stops, I prefer to
linger, the Italians prefer to stand and gulp theirs. It is less expensive to
stand and drink your coffee, if you sit down there is a charge for that
privilege. However by the time I need a coffee break, I also need a sit-down
break to recharge.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I try and avoid the height of the tourist season, it is far
more expensive, and overcrowded and prefer to go early Spring or late Fall.
Sometimes as in this trip, the timing depended upon the kiddies and their
activities. Rome is a walking city, cobblestones notwithstanding, comfortable
shoes are de rigueur. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>

Venice has captured my heart. Since I'm obsessing almost daily about Venice, I need to plan a trip that will take me back to that magical place. Hopefully next year. The ultimate dream would be to do a signing for A Hotel in Venice. A girl can dream...</div>

It is an incredible place steeped in magic and evening shadows. If you'd like to read more about my impressions of Venice, I posted an article on the travel page on my website. </div>

The port of Agadir was my first visit to North Africa. Our
tour included a souk visit, which is a typical market/bazaar, tented and
patched with whatever was handy, you could see imagination at work everywhere
you turned.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
The souk we visited was positively huge, there was no time
to stop and shop, our guide was rather persistent that we stay together, and he
just marched on, one turn after another in a wondrous maze. I was grateful, I
tend to wander off and get lost; they’d probably still be looking for me today,
but I was smart enough to stick to the guide like the proverbial glue.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Alley upon alley of curved and narrow paths, most were dirt,
others had tile, cracked plaster, still others pieces of bricks, well worn rugs,
all uneven, and all led to infinity. It seemed never ending. Anything was for
sale from cheese to meat to clothes, massive selections of olives, live poultry
and everything in between. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
We walked through town for a little bit, visited the top of
the hill, or mountain as the guide indicated, where in 1960 at almost midnight
a volcanic eruption killed 20,000 people. The place remains untouched,

After the somber reminder of the loss of those poor souls, a
welcome break called the Fantasia Show was held in a tent and garden, where
galloping horses and riders with guns drawn came to a sudden stop and fired into
the air, even a snake charmer was thrown in for good measure. There were
souvenirs to buy, and one was expected to haggle. Even patient camels were
waiting for tourists to ride them-the awkward creatures are actually quite
soulful, graceful and limber. </div>

Then I had a tough day in the office, came home and tried to read-that usually relaxed me. Not that day-I sat down with pad and paper and started writing-it was truly bizarre, an unforgettable afternoon, and the birth of <i>A Hotel in Paris</i>. The first thing I had ever written other than office memos. I pitched it at a conference, and a small publisher took me on. My publisher and I have since parted company, and I am an indie author.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "sans-serif"; font-size: 14pt; line-height: 115%;">The story started out as a full mystery, until the two protagonists met. There was an instant chemical reaction, and I was lost. I had never read romance novels, and needed a quick education. I discovered RWA, and joined the local chapter, and found I really loved the genre, the happy endings-the sheer and total escape from our everyday reality. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "sans-serif"; font-size: 14pt; line-height: 115%;"><b><i><span style="color: red;">Margot</span></i></b>- I received the usual ‘thanks, but no thanks’, most often no response at all, but one was a hoot, a verbal rejection. At a local RWA conference, I approached an editor from a well known publisher who said she was looking for an original voice, something fresh, and I pitched my story, she listened, told me again how important an original voice was, and in the same breath, asked who do I write like? I was so taken aback, I had no immediate response, other than stand there stupefied until I finally had enough sense to thank her for her time. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "sans-serif"; font-size: 14pt; line-height: 115%;"><b><i><span style="color: red;">Margot</span></i></b>- The first thing is not to give up, accept rejection for what it is-a totally subjective, and far from perfect process. Not everyone is going to like what you write. The advice I have been given, and took to heart is not to chase the popular genres, they change with the wind. Patience and a thick skin are essential in this business.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

Fortunately, the publication world is changing daily. There is a revolution going on, and a writer no longer has to have an agent, or publisher. Indie publication is a fast growing business, and many are succeeding. That being said, it is tough for an unknown writer to make a living at it, it is a slow painstaking process to develop a readership. A good editor is essential to the process, I cannot stress that enough. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
As the news reported, the East Coast was blanketed by snow this weekend. Our area had about 18 inches of the white fluffy stuff-at least that was reported at the Reagan Airport, and I'm in the area. No doubt it was a severe storm.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
There were almost a 1000 reported accidents in VA. I wonder why people are on the road if they don't have to be. Or for that matter walk on the road because sidewalks are impassable, they risk being killed, or causing an accident and maiming or killing someone else. The DC Mayor kept telling people to stay off the roads, and many didn't listen. Why is that so difficult? </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The media spent most of the time on the storm, rehashing stuff over and over. As someone being interviewed put it 'watching the non-story'. I'm pretty sure other things were happening all over the world, but the focus was local. I can understand that, but much of it was a continuous repeat. I guess they call it-human interest-how people were spending their time during the storm. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I thought about the coverage, the things that we pay attention to, and the things that we ignore, the things that the media thinks we want to hear. They're probably right, it's what sells, not necessarily good, solid reporting, but it sells, and that is where the revenue comes from. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I took a stroll before the storm settled in comfortably. I rather enjoy a walk in the fresh falling snow, but know enough to get in before it becomes dangerous. Had my battery powered lamp, candles, and fully charged phone, and plenty of blankets ready in case power went out. Stopped in the store a couple of days before the storm hit, so there was no need to drive.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Our area was fortunate, people paid attention, and power was okay. At any rate, I have a few pictures of my little corner.</div>
<div>

<br />
Many of us have certain tradition for every holiday, and for me Christmas and the New Year are the most fun, and a few revolve around food. I've posted my favorite recipes, and here are a couple more that make it to the Christmas dinner.<br />
<br />
This year we were lucky to see the National Tree in DC, that added to the festive mood of the season.<br />
<br />
Below are 3 more excellent holiday foods.<br />
<br />
Panettone, an Italian cake filled with dried fruit and citrus flavorings-I have developed a love affair with Italy, and this one is a must for breakfast with a delicious cup of coffee. It smells heavenly, tasted delicious and brings back many memories for me. The Panettone I buy in the grocery store, it is readily available, even Costco sells them<br />
<br />
The other food is the spinach and ricotta pie-I've been making it for years, and it is always a favorite either for breakfast or a midday snack. The recipe is from an old cookbook I've had for decades-The Romagnolis' Table. They called it Torta Verde di Ricotta. Recipe is below, it is truly delicious.<br />
<br />
Spinach Pie<br />
I use a store bought pie filling-you will need only 1.<br />
Filling:<br />
1 10 oz package of frozen chopped spinach-drained.<br />
1 lb of ricotta<br />
1 large egg<br />
1/2 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg<br />
8 tablespoon grated Parmesan<br />
1/2 cup of flour<br />
1 teaspoon salt (I use less)<br />
4 tablespoons of butter. I use 1 tablespoon.<br />
<br />
Preheat oven to 350.<br />
<br />
Put the ricotta in a medium bowl, add the spinach and mix well. Add the egg, the nutmeg and salt. Fold in 4 tablespoons of the Parmesan, (I've been known to add more Parmesan), and add the flour. Mix well.<br />
<br />
Prepare the pie crust, and spread the filling in the unbaked pie crust. Sprinkle the top with the remaining Parmesan, and dot with butter. There is no need to use all 4 tablespoons-one will do nicely.<br />
<br />
Bake at 350 for an hour. It'll be very hot, allow to cool before cutting. It is truly delicious, and easy to make.<br />
<br />
There are some wonderful recipes in that cookbook, it is well worn and highly treasured.<br />
<br />
The other food is a relative new comer, but it is easy, delicious and requires no care-all the cooking is done in the slow cooker. During a busy day, that is indeed a good offering.<br />
<br />
Beef Giardiniera<br />
<br />
I buy cut up stew meat (Costco)-nothing new there I love that store.<br />
I spray my slow cooker with Pam, and warm it up.<br />
<br />
2 diced onions<br />
4 sliced carrots<br />
3 celery stocks cut<br />
3 lbs of stew meat<br />
5 bay leaves<br />
2 jars of giardiniera-either in oil or vinegar-whatever is available- either way I drain the veggies well.<br />
Salt and pepper to taste<br />
1 can of low sodium chicken or beef broth<br />
1 pouch of McCromick brwon gravy<br />
<br />
Put the ingredients in the slow cooker, and mix well, add half the can of the broth, and allow to slow cook for 6 hours. If more broth is needed, add some more.<br />
<br />
Mix the remainder of the broth and the brown gravy packet and add to stew-allow to cook until meat is tender. Serve with potatoes or brown rice, couscous, or even pasta. Easy delicious and flavorful.<br />
This one is not just for the holiday, it is so easy can be done anytime.<br />
<br />
Happy New Year!<br />

<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
The holiday season is upon us, and I thought I’d share some
of my favorite recipes with you. This week it is fudge; easy to make and
delicious.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white;">
<span style="color: black;">Fudge<br />
<br />
1 stick of butter <br />
<br />
1 large can of evaporated milk<br />
<br />
2 oz bitter chocolate (I only use Ghirardelli chocolate)<br />
<br />
12 oz semi sweet or dark chocolate chips<br />
<br />
2 lbs sugar (4 ½ cups)<br />
<br />
12 oz dark chocolate <br />
<br />
½ lb small marshmallows<br />
<br />
1 ½ tbsp Vanilla <br />
<br />
1 cup of chopped walnuts-Optional (I use 2 cups) <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white;">
<span style="color: black;">1cup of
raisins-Optional (I soak them in Myer’s dark rum overnight, and mix the rum
into the chocolate-not a drop is wasted) Soaking the raisins is optional, but the
rum adds a terrific taste to the fudge.<br />
<br />
Combine butter, canned milk and sugar, stir over medium heat until sugar is
dissolved, cook to a boil, about 5 minutes.<br />
<br />
Turn off heat and add marshmallows, stir until melted, add the 3 types of
chocolate, one at a time, stir until each is dissolved. Add vanilla, raisins
with all the rum, nuts and stir.<br />
<br />
Line a cookie sheet with saran wrap, extending the edges; pour the fudge into
the cookie pan, spread evenly with knife or spatula. <br />
<br />
Let dry for 2 days. Invert the fudge unto your counter, remove wrap and let dry
for another 2 days. Cut into squares and serve. <br />
<br />
This recipe makes quite a bit of fudge, I cut it all up and store in tin cans
or sealed plastic bags. My family loves the fudge, and it usually doesn’t last
very long. Makes a great gift too. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

The air was nippy, and breezy, but it didn't stop many from visiting and boarding the many boats on display.<br />
<br />
I took a few pictures, it seems boating is rather a favorite activity in the area-and many actually live on board year round. Not a bad lifestyle.<br />
<br />
I'm still enjoying my condo living, but maybe down the road in a couple of years, I'll exchange the condo for a boat. Downsizing is not a bad thing, in fact it forces you to accumulate less stuff. At my age-that is an excellent thing.<br />

<div class="MsoNormal">
<div style="line-height: 200%;">
Florence, Italy 1503</div>
<div style="line-height: 200%;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="line-height: normal;">"I am a
vampire, Leonardo."</span></div>
<div style="line-height: 200%;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="line-height: normal;">"I am well
aware of that fact, Nikolai, but you have the soul of an artist."</span></div>
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%; text-indent: .5in;">
<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%; text-indent: .5in;">
"I repeat: I
am a vampire. And make no mistake—I have no soul."<br />
<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%; text-indent: .5in;">
As a course for
survival, Nikolai lost his soul centuries ago, but there was no reason in
belaboring the point. Leonardo da Vinci was entitled to his belief.<br />
<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%; text-indent: .5in;">
Nikolai stood in
the middle of the cavernous room and looked around him. Flickering candles cast
shadows on the walls. A massive wooden desk was shoved against bare brick, one
end piled with old rags coated in deep and rich colors. Leonardo's palette lay
on the floor recklessly abandoned, and paint splashes had spilled onto the
wooden floor, filling the wide cracks between the boards. A stale oil smell
permeated the room; used candles were everywhere, surrounded by mounds of spent
wax. Books were stacked up on the floor against another wall, one on top of the
other. An old wooden chair pushed against a corner, stained with crimson paint;
the cushion looked like a splash of blood. A tapestry covered the wall where a
makeshift straw bed lay on the floor.<br />
<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%; text-indent: .5in;">
"I repeat:
You, my dear friend, have the soul of an artist. Vampire or not."<br />
<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%; text-indent: .5in;">
"I collect
art, hence our deep and abiding friendship—all due to your masterful
accomplishments. I have no other such talents. At least, other than being
eternal, ageless and my uncanny ability to amass a fortune at every
opportunity. Typical vampire standards: anything I want, when I want, and how I
want. Staying alive for eons does allow one to become complacent. Despite the
danger, eternal existence does permit certain pleasures. And for me, the
building of a sizable art collection is most gratifying, and a venture which I
intend to continue through the ages." The brusque, low voice was
mesmerizing in its intensity, and hid any emotion, any visible trace of
anguish. He simply stated these facts as if they were nothing.<br />
<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%; text-indent: .5in;">
Nikolai Volkov
watched as Leonardo picked up burned out candles and stray brushes he had left
everywhere. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%; text-indent: .5in;">
"Nikolai, you
support artists that are being ignored, ridiculed. You redeem us. You recognize
ageless talent. I am egotistical enough to say that in the coming centuries I
will survive through my art."<br />
<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%; text-indent: .5in;">
"Of that I
have no doubt. Again, that is why I collect your paintings; your drawings alone
are incomparable. I know you will survive. And you will increase my wealth
substantially." Nikolai turned and looked at the various paintings leaning
against one of the stone walls. In the corner canvases were stacked in no
particular order, and next to them wooden planks.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%; text-indent: .5in;">
Leonardo's studio
was plain, utilitarian, and filled with finished and unfinished works of art,
all of which Nikolai coveted and wanted to own. Possess.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%; text-indent: .5in;">
"Yes, I am
sure I will survive, but only through my art. You have and will continue to
survive through other means. Ones I do not wish to think about."<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%; text-indent: .5in;">
"I have paid
dearly for my survival." Nikolai touched his cheek, feeling the ridge of
the deep scar on his face. That attack had been particularly brutal. The cut
went all the way to the bone, and not allowed to heal. Lucrezia Borgia told him
it would mar his stunning beauty and further bind him to her, both physically
and emotionally. She was wrong on both counts. He considered the scar his badge
of courage and tenacity. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%; text-indent: .5in;">
His surreal
beauty, as she had once described it, now marred by that one scar. A reminder
of torture. A memory not to be forgotten. Vampires do not scar, yet that one
single scar on his body remained, as if an omen of things yet to come. Centuries
of memories all held within that singular ridged cut on his face that slashed
down to his very soul. The one he claimed not to have. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%; text-indent: .5in;">
He was tall, over
six-foot-three, with hair black as night. His eyes were as blue as sapphires
and frigid as the Arctic ice. Nikolai was built hard, like Michelangelo's
David, and just as cold. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%; text-indent: .5in;">
The lethal
combination fostered first and foremost fear from man and demon alike. And
admiration, from women. All women. He never lacked for company. Yet, they all
left him unsatisfied, and yearning for something he didn’t understand. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%; text-indent: .5in;">
"Leonardo,
will you paint a portrait for me?" Nikolai spoke quietly, staring at a
painting stacked against a wall, his back to Leonardo.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%; text-indent: .5in;">
"You?"<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%; text-indent: .5in;">
"No. Not
me." Nikolai replied, his bleak smile was more of a grimace that did not
reach his eyes. "This will be from memory. My memory."<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%; text-indent: .5in;">
"Does she
mean something to you? I assume you are speaking of a woman."<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%; text-indent: .5in;">
"Yes, I was.
And yes, she meant something to me." He ran his finger along the jagged
scar.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%; text-indent: .5in;">
"Ah, I see. I
gather she was not a pleasant memory.''<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%; text-indent: .5in;">
"You gather
correctly."<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%; text-indent: .5in;">
"I will do it
for you. Tell me everything you know about her. Every single memory. Every
movement. Everything you remember. Give me a perfect description of the
mysterious woman. It will be my gift to you."<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%; text-indent: .5in;">
"I do not
wish to keep the painting." Nikolai visibly shuddered at the thought.
"You may do with it what you will. Burn it in hell for all I care."
His reply was savage.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%; text-indent: .5in;">
"I see."
Leonardo replied thoughtfully, rubbing his chin. "Why do you want me to
paint it?"<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%; text-indent: .5in;">
"To exorcise
a demon. One among many."<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%; text-indent: .5in;">
"Do you wish
to discuss it, my friend?"<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%; text-indent: .5in;">
"No. Just
paint the damn thing. You will be well paid."<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%; text-indent: .5in;">
"No,"
Leonardo replied vehemently, shaking his hand in the air. "There will be
no money changing hands. I will paint it. I will not burn it; I will sell it. I
do have a payment to demand of you. Once I am done, I expect to hear why I
painted it. That is my demand. Do you agree?"<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%; text-indent: .5in;">
"Yes, damn
you. I will agree to your terms. Your absurd demand."<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%; text-indent: .5in;">
"Why absurd?
She obviously damaged you. I would have to be an idiot not to recognize the
symptoms. And I am not an idiot." <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%; text-indent: .5in;">
"Yes, I am
fully aware that you are not an idiot. You should be terrified of me. Yet you
are not. You reason things out. You think. A vampire, even in your century,
should horrify you. Yet, I do not."<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%; text-indent: .5in;">
"You terrify
me, all right. Your power. Your strength. Your ability to kill without thought.
Your survival through the centuries. Your knowledge of the past. Yes, you alarm
me, my friend."<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%; text-indent: .5in;">
"Alarm…that
is a milksop statement. Leonardo, look at your own drawings. You see what is to
come. What does that say about you? Your work foreshadows the future. It is
right there in your drawings." Nikolai pointed to a canvas leaning against
a wall. "You are more than an artist; our long discussions have proven
that. You are a genius. A man of re-birth. You, here and now, could be
considered demonic. That is how some would interpret your work."<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%; text-indent: .5in;">
"I will
ignore that. It is safer not to discuss people and their survival methods—it
might be misunderstood. Fortunately for me, my work is not well understood.
Most everyone sees a painting or a drawing, nothing more. Perhaps they even
think I am mad. A simple man cannot interpret what I imagine simply by looking
at my canvas. That is indeed very good for me." Leonardo sighed.
"Now, let us get back to your description of the woman."<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%; text-indent: .5in;">
"Have I
touched a sensitive spot?" the vampire asked. Sarcasm dripped from every
word.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%; text-indent: .5in;">
"Yes."
Leonardo hissed between his teeth. "Now, give me the damn
description."<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%; text-indent: .5in;">
"Paint her as
you would a beloved portrait. Make her mysterious. Enigmatic. Serene. Perfectly
poised to attract attention. Paint her as the central and pivotal person in the
scene. In fact blur everything else. Nothing should matter much save her face
and hands. Long, beautiful fingers, elegant hands with perfect skin, relaxed.
Incapable of hard work. Make her look innocent. Wistful." Nikolai stopped
speaking, and again touched his face along the line of the scar.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%; text-indent: .5in;">
"Make the
damn demon, the savage beast…saintly. That will be the joke for centuries to
come. Paint it dark, yet give her light. A shimmer, so that she almost glows.
Make her irresistible. Give her eyes that damn the soul. Eyes that see beyond
the present. Is that enough for you?"<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%; text-indent: .5in;">
"Yes. Do I
have leave to choose the color of her hair and eyes?" Leonardo asked
quietly, captivated by Nikolai’s mesmerizing voice and the tortured memories he
was reliving.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%; text-indent: .5in;">
"I do not
care what color you choose. Dark is what I desire."<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%; text-indent: .5in;">
"It shall be
done. You want her to look enigmatic, a mystery through the ages. How is that
for conceit? She will survive centuries, whereas I will die."<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%; text-indent: .5in;">
"You, my
friend, will be reborn every time someone looks at your work. But you already
know that. Your art will speak for you for eternity."<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%; text-indent: .5in;">
"Let us
continue as we have in the past, Nikolai." Leonardo preferred to ignore
rather than acknowledge the reality of his existence. "Your life is
eternal. You do not age. Let us leave it at that. Be careful not be recognized,
it might endanger you."<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%; text-indent: .5in;">
"I am four
hundred years old. Through the centuries of battles, corruption, and betrayal,
no one pays any attention to whether or not I age. Everyone is consumed with
their own survival. I expect that in the future, I shall need to take better
care."<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%; text-indent: .5in;">
"Take better
care, but live. Even if you cannot be killed, live as you have done in the
past." Leonardo spoke softly, as if afraid of being overheard.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%; text-indent: .5in;">
"I aim to
live better, and I can be killed; one just has to know how. I certainly do not
discuss that aspect of my survival. I am alone, removed from my clan. Solitary,
my lair and art my only comfort. It has been this way for centuries and, make
no mistake, Leonardo—it is a lonely existence. You, my friend are a true master
and you bring me a great deal of pleasure. Someday your work will be priceless.
Look at your drawings. See the things I see in your work. You behold the future
in front of you."<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%; text-indent: .5in;">
<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>"Indeed." Leonardo dismissed
Nikolai's predictions with a wave of his hand. "I may need you again,
after I begin the portrait, of course." Leonardo spoke absentmindedly,
stretching his fingers, already thinking about the unusual commission. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%; text-indent: .5in;">

<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I’m working on the fourth hotel book, and this one is set in
Barcelona. It is a city filled with art, amazing architecture and an incredible
zest and appreciation for life.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Barcelona is exciting, vibrant and the locals know how to
enjoy themselves, they possess the<i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;"> joie
de vivre</i> that is hard to miss, and often times hard to find. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
The architecture is unsurpassed, modern and old blends well
together, and of course there is Gaudi-it is worth a visit to Barcelona just to
see his work. It is unforgettable. I loved it so much that I posted a separate
blog about his stunning and imaginative style. The amazing thing is that once
you see it, you want to do it again, and again, simply because you probably
missed the marvelous details the first time through. His work is beyond whimsy.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
There are museums to be sure, Miro, Dali and Picasso have a
foundation in Barcelona. The stunning architecture will take your breath away,
everywhere you turn you see a magnificent building, from Gothic to Art Nouveau
to the indescribable and incomparable Gaudi treasures, to contemporary and everything in
between. Landmarks abound. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
At any given time stroll on La Rambla, and you’ll see locals
and savvy tourists sit down in a cafe and enjoy a beer, tapas, coffee, along
with a dish of green olives, or just stroll arm in arm on the wide avenue that
is both romantic, hectic and invigorating. There are many souvenirs shops that
line the famous <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">paseo</i>, all the
kitschy tourist stuff, pottery, foods and other items made locally, along with
entertainment, and all of it delightful. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
The street is filled to capacity, and I for one at this
stage in my life don’t like crowds, and if truth be told-never did-but I really
rather enjoyed the lovely walk, and a stop for the obligatory delicious coffee.
I had a wondrous adventure just walking down the street. You see people smile,
nod their heads in acknowledgement as you stroll along as if in a romantic
dream. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
The city also boasts a beautiful coast line, and one of the
biggest ports in Europe, along with some beautiful parks, even one designed by
Gaudi. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Have I forgotten to mention the food-it is delicious-they
create a mouth watering delight<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>with just
potatoes. Okay, I’m Polish and happen to love potatoes, but the <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Patatas Bravas</i> are truly yummy, roasted
potatoes, a yummy sauce with a slight bite that you feel on the tip of your
tongue. The excellent bread and incredible local hams would have kept me happy
for a long time. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
A huge array of cheeses, hams, breads, olives, an amazing
selection of fish, all that is available in many tapas bars. The offerings are
small, so you can visit many places and taste the amazing variety of appetizers.
A delightful and delicious way to sample the local cuisine.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Shopping abounds on <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Passeig
de Gracia</i>, favorably compared to other famous boulevards with prices to
match. I enjoyed the walk, and window shopping, the displays are imaginative
and fun, and I was grateful that I travel light with little room for souvenirs.
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
That being said, I managed to buy a few small trinkets for
family and friends, the souvenir shop at the Gaudi Casa Batllo was amazing, and
yes-all my souvenirs came from that shop. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
There are many hotels and as always prices range from low to
high, it all depends on your budget. You will find delicious and reasonably
priced tapas bars off the main tourist areas, but if you’re in with the tourist
crowds be prepared to pay. I do a bit of research<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>before I leave, but I always allow for a
tourist trap or two. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I booked the Casa Fuster Hotel, on <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Passeig de Gracia</i> 132, on my first visit, a beautiful hotel
reminiscent of Gaudi’s work, the service was superb, the rooms a good size, the
breakfasts superb, and<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>the staff always
eager to help with directions and available tours, they were friendly and
caring. I hope to return and stay there again.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
The second hotel was the Majestic, also on <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Passeig de Gracia</i> 68-70, was a little
more centrally located-by just a few blocks from Casa Fuster. That being said,
I would rather walk the additional 4 or 5 blocks than stay at the Majestic
again, lack of overall service, and a snippy registration cured me of ever
staying there a second time. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
The Majestic staff lost interest after I didn’t want to book
a private car to Montserrat to the tune of 600Euros. After a discussion on
booking a reasonable tour failed, a short 10 minute walk took me to a travel
agency, where I was able to book a round trip ride for 29EU that would take me to
the Montserrat <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Monastery for the better
part of the day. It is a trip not to be missed. I’ll post a separate blog on
the location-it is in the mountains and it is magnificent. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I’m a breakfast person, and tend to eat the meal at the
hotel to save on time, and the breakfast at the Majestic was outstanding. I
couldn’t have asked for a more varied or delicious selection, and the coffee
was delicious, but the lack of care and concern from the registration staff
ruined any chance of my return to the hotel.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Barcelona has it all, and is definitely worth a visit or
two, or three. </div>

<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
The old adage write what you know and love is true, at least
for me-but you should also learn while you write. It adds an additional
dimension to the stories. A sense of wonder and discovery both for the reader
and the writer.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I love to travel and have been fortunate to be able to visit
the places I write about. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
My first love is Paris, I lived there for a year, and have
gone back a few times. It stood to reason that my first romantic mystery story
should be set there.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I’m familiar with
the city, and over the years little has changed in my perspective. The Louvre
now has Pei’s Pyramid at the entrance, many more buildings have been added, but
the age old charm is still very much there. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
The charming cafes, the gardens, the historical buildings
are all as they were. It is easy to write as if sitting in a cafe and observing
life go by. That is especially true on the grandest <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>boulevard of them all, the Champs Elyssee. It’s
easy to make the city come alive, it was my first love as a semi adult, and
continues to this day. A grand love affair with the city of lights.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
The second book, set in Bath, England was a bit more
difficult, but I have visited twice, the second time, I spent a few days
getting to know the city. The historical significance is amazing, after all the
city is over two thousand years old, and dates back to the Romans. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Most information is available on line, but you need to be
careful to select only the key points that are relevant to the story, otherwise
it will turn out to be a travelogue within the story.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>You need the ‘scent’ of the city, what does
it feel like to walk the streets Jane Austen most probably walked. Stroll over
lead pipes that the Romans built,<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>and
imagine who else followed in those same footsteps. Who else prayed in the
ancient Abbey, and who ate the Sally Lunn cakes, after all the restaurant dates
back to the 1620’s.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
The third book in the hotel cities is set in Venice, a city
that has captured my heart and hasn’t let go. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
It’s magic is potent, the architecture, history and art sublime.
Every step taken is an amazing adventure in the past. Follow the path of
Casanova, on which bridge did he wait in the cover of darkness for his rendezvous
with a lover? Who else walked in those same footsteps? Who crossed the Bridge
of Sighs-going from palace to prison?</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
A tourist trap to be sure, but there are places that few
tourists visit, side streets, small canals, churches, all it takes is a sense
of adventure and wonder, and a map. I get lost sometimes just crossing a couple
of streets, and in Venice there are many curvy and meandering little alleys
that will ultimately lead to water, and the <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">getting
lost</i> process is rather enjoyable. I speak from experience. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Even though I write contemporary romance stories, I love
history and art, and that is what I write, goes back to the beginning, write
what you know and love.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal">

<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<o:p> </o:p>There is a sense of relief, once <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">the end</i> is typed, and the manuscript is finished, well at least
written. I'm at that stage now. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
English is not my first language, and when I came to this
country (a few years-as in many- years ago), students were put in a class based
on age-and the grammar part has long past. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I have been assured by my editor that my grammar is not that
bad, and I think that is due to the fact that I love to read, but I digress...Finishing
a manuscript is a wondrous sense of relief, because while writing, it seems as
if it won’t ever happen. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I edit every time I sit down to write, and once the
manuscript is finished it goes to my editor and she goes through it, then of
course I read it and invariably make corrections based on her recommendations-especially
in grammar. Then it goes back to the editor, well you get the drift. I have my
final two, three, four reads and off it goes to the formatter. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I’m an indie author and my formatter does all the magical
stuff to make sure everything is done correctly. Once he’s done I read it
again, and invariably I find little errors, and back it goes. By the time I get
the last peek, it really doesn’t matter because I expect to see all the words
aligned perfectly, and in place. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
The writing process is humbling, I start off excited, I have
an idea and off I go. Then reality sets in, I have to figure out what will
happen and how will I ever tie all the pieces together. Since I write by the
proverbial seat of my pants, the endings tend to surprise me. That was especially true in <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">A Hotel in Venice</i>.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
One day the story is terrific, the next it is rubbish that
no one will want to read, the next day, it’s not so bad, back to rubbish...you
get the drift. It is a never ending process of self doubt, until finally
everything falls into place, and then I wonder exactly how did that all work
out? That being said, the doubts persist, at least for me.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">A Hotel in Venice</i>
has been released, and now I’m working on <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">A

an astounding zest for life, the architecture sublime, food delicious, what
better place for a honeymoon.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
I haven’t posted any blogs for the last three weeks, went
back to Illinois, had a book signing in Galena, visits with friends, and Printers
Row in Chicago.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
The best moment at Printers was when a woman who bought <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">A Hotel in Paris</i> on Saturday, came back
for <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">A Hotel in Bath</i> on Sunday, and
took information on <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">A Hotel in</i> <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Venice, </i>scheduled for release later this
month.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Working on the release details for <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">A Hotel in Venice</i>, I wonder if offering the first book in a
series free on Kindle is worthwhile. I know it’s important to build name
recognition, and increased long term readership, but do people that download the
books for free actually even read them? </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I’ve heard pros and cons about the free promotion and tried
it twice-not sure it was worth <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>it.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I do like the idea of posting quotes from the
book on Twitter and Facebook. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
My little niche market is growing, and I’ve been told by readers
that they love my art world, and while reading my books they have learned a little
about art. That pleased me more than anything.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>I always tell anyone who will listen, art is everywhere we turn, and
that it is highly therapeutic.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Price is important too, a reader is more likely<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>to give a midlist author a chance if the book
is priced reasonably, a dollar, two, three or four-the price of coffee depending
on what you buy. I’d never say substitute coffee for a book, after all my
heroine is addicted to the brew as is her creator-but...</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Back home and my normal schedule, I stepped out of my
comfort zone, and finished a first draft of a thriller <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>sans</i> romance. I was asked to
do it, and before I knew it I was writing the story.</div>
